Samsara Automates Fleet Safety With AI Coaching Tools
Samsara Inc. (NYSE: IOT) announced AI-powered coaching features for its Connected Operations Platform on March 10, designed to reduce manual safety management work for fleet managers. The system monitors over 45 factors to automatically classify safety events, routing serious incidents to managers and minor ones to drivers for self-service coaching.
The update introduces two new manager tools. AI Role Play lets managers simulate difficult conversations with an AI driver before having them in person. AI Guided Coaching provides structured frameworks for one-on-one feedback sessions. A Safety Program Overview dashboard tracks coaching performance, compliance, and behavior changes across the fleet.
Ecolab, an early adopter, reported managing thousands of coaching events in a single month with significant time savings for its operations team.
Continuous Safety Loop for Drivers
The platform extends safety support throughout a driver's shift. Automated audio briefings play in the cab at the start of each day, summarizing personalized risks like severe weather and highlighting safety milestones. During trips, two-way audio coaching provides real-time feedback. After trips, an AI Avatar offers post-drive coaching.
The goal is behavior change that reduces crashes and potentially lowers insurance premiums. By combining automated alerts with human coaching, the system creates multiple touchpoints for safety reinforcement.
What This Means for Operations Teams
For operations managers, the automation handles routine safety event triage and documentation. This frees time to focus on high-risk drivers and program strategy rather than administrative work. The centralized dashboard gives leadership visibility into whether coaching actually changes driver behavior-a metric most fleets struggle to measure.
