Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance Partners with Cambridge Mobile Telematics to Enhance Driver Safety in South Korea

Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance (SFMI), South Korea’s leading insurer, has announced a strategic partnership with Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT), the world’s largest telematics provider. This collaboration follows a global evaluation process and aims to leverage advanced AI and telematics technology to improve road safety across South Korea.

CMT was chosen for its expertise in signal processing, mobility data harmonization, driving risk analytics, and crash detection. The partnership aligns with SFMI’s goal to increase safe driving awareness and provide timely assistance after vehicle crashes, enhancing overall road safety.

Addressing South Korea’s Road Safety Challenges

South Korea has made steady progress in reducing road fatalities, recording a historic low of 2,735 deaths in 2022 — a 6.2% decrease from the previous year, marking ten consecutive years of decline. Despite this progress, challenges remain:

  • Drivers aged 75 and older face a mortality rate nearly four times higher than the general population.
  • Pedestrians account for 35% of all road deaths, one of the highest rates among OECD countries.
  • Distracted driving is common, with 42% of drivers admitting to phone use behind the wheel, contributing to a 5% increase in distraction-related crashes in 2023.
  • The economic cost of traffic accidents is estimated at ₩20.8 trillion annually, representing 1.3% of South Korea’s GDP.

How This Partnership Benefits Insurers and Drivers

By integrating CMT’s AI-driven telematics platform, SFMI will equip drivers with tools that detect distraction, encourage safer driving habits, and provide instant crash response. This technology uses smartphone sensors to monitor driving behavior and delivers real-time alerts that help reduce risk and prevent collisions.

For insurers, this means better risk assessment and the ability to offer proactive support and roadside assistance, ultimately lowering claim costs and improving customer satisfaction. Programs like this can also enhance brand loyalty by demonstrating a commitment to customer safety beyond traditional insurance coverage.

Statements from Leadership

Jonghyeok Joo, Head of Customer Experience at SFMI, emphasized the company’s mission: “Our priority is protecting customers in every moment that matters, especially on the road. Partnering with CMT enables us to improve driver behavior, reduce risk, and respond to crashes in real-time. This partnership strengthens our promise of safety, service, and peace of mind.”

William V. Powers, Co-Founder and CEO of CMT, added, “South Korea’s progress in reducing traffic deaths is impressive. Through this partnership, we’re bringing proven technology to accelerate that momentum and provide drivers with the tools they need to stay safe.”
