Saudi Arabia Advances AI Adoption with New National Index
The Saudi government is pushing forward its artificial intelligence (AI) agenda with the launch of the National Artificial Intelligence Index. Initiated by the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), this index measures the AI readiness and maturity across government agencies. Over 180 representatives took part in the first measurement cycle, highlighting the broad engagement within the public sector.
This index serves as a practical tool to evaluate how government entities implement AI solutions and provides clear recommendations to improve capabilities. The goal is to support innovative, data-driven services across key sectors while tracking progress on a regular basis.
Clear Targets Aligned with National Strategy
The initiative aligns with Saudi Arabia’s National Strategy for Data and Artificial Intelligence. It supports government goals to rank:
- Among the top 15 countries globally in AI
- Within the top 10 in the Open Data Index
- In the top 20 for data and AI-related publications
PwC estimates that AI will contribute $235.2 billion, or 12.4%, to Saudi Arabia’s GDP by 2030. This underscores the economic significance of AI adoption in the Kingdom.
How the Index Works
The index evaluates AI readiness based on three main pillars, seven axes, and 23 sub-fields. This comprehensive framework ensures a detailed assessment of government agencies’ capabilities and progress. The results reflect the maturity of AI adoption and provide concrete support to enhance institutional performance.
The index is a key part of SDAIA’s role as the national authority responsible for advancing data and AI development and regulation. It aims to drive innovation in the public sector and help government bodies deliver effective, sustainable AI solutions that contribute to Saudi Vision 2030.
International Recognition and Public Engagement
Recently, SDAIA received two international accreditation certificates from the Global Excellence Assembly. These awards recognize SDAIA’s adherence to best practices in institutional excellence and transparent evaluation processes.
In addition to internal government efforts, SDAIA is actively involving the public to improve digital services. Earlier this month, it launched an electronic consultation to gather feedback on the Ehsan National Platform for Charitable Work. Citizens and residents are invited to share their views on which services require improvement.
Why This Matters for Government and Product Development Professionals
For those working in government and product development, this index offers a clear framework to assess AI readiness and identify specific areas for improvement. It promotes data-driven decision-making and encourages the development of AI applications that deliver measurable value.
Understanding this index and its results can help professionals align their projects with national priorities and contribute to building smarter, more efficient public services.
