SBI Life and IIT Bombay partner to build India's own AI-powered cyber defence systems for insurance

SBI Life Insurance and the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) have signed an MoU to create the Bharat Innovation Hub, a joint research centre that will build India's own AI-powered cyber defence systems for the insurance sector. The move comes as India's insurance premium growth is forecast at 6.9% annually until 2030, making it the fastest-growing major insurance market and intensifying the need to protect expanding customer data.

The partnership, formalised in the presence of senior leadership from both institutions, aims to shift the insurance industry away from dependence on imported security frameworks and toward indigenous, deep-technology defences. The hub will focus on developing solutions across artificial intelligence, cyber security, quantum technologies, and the future of insurance - areas central to AI for Insurance.

Indigenous cyber defence for a growing market

India's insurance penetration is rising, and with it, the volume of sensitive customer data. The hub represents a deliberate move to build cyber defence capabilities designed, built, and owned in India, aligning with the government's Atmanirbhar Bharat vision. SBI Life's operational depth in insurance will combine with IIT Bombay's research expertise to craft scalable and resilient solutions that meet both customer and regulatory expectations in an increasingly digital world.

An AI-native insurer strategy

Mr. Abhijit Gulanikar, President - Operations & IT, SBI Life Insurance, said: "The next era of value creation in financial services will be led by organisations that don't just consume technology, but actively build it. By bringing together some of India's brightest scientific minds with our deep understanding of insurance, we are choosing to innovate, build, and scale from India, for India. Through the partnership with IIT-Bombay we are building an indigenous, AI-native foundation that protects every customer who trusts us with their financial future, while strengthening the resilience of the wider insurance industry."

The collaboration signals SBI Life's ambition to become an AI-native insurer, one that creates its own technology rather than simply adopting off-the-shelf tools. The hub will work on AI-driven tools for cyber defence, potentially offering new ways to detect and respond to threats in real time.

Building talent and a sector template

Prof. Ganesh Ramakrishnan, Chair Professor, Dept. of CSE, IIT-Bombay & Founding Director, BharatGen, said: "At IIT Bombay, our endeavour has always been to apply world-class research to challenges that matter to society. Protecting the financial security of millions of citizens is exactly such a challenge. This partnership allows academia to work shoulder-to-shoulder with industry on real-world problems in artificial intelligence, cyber security, and quantum technologies with sovereignty at the core. Thus, translating fundamental research into solutions that serve the nation. More importantly, by nurturing the next generation of Indian talent, we are strengthening the country's ability to build its own sovereign technological capabilities. We are proud to partner with SBI Life in building, from India and for India."

Beyond immediate technology development, the Bharat Innovation Hub is designed to create a structured model for academia-industry collaboration in regulated sectors. It aims to build a homegrown talent pipeline in AI and cyber security, helping to advance India's institutional readiness against digital threats. The partnership could serve as a template for the broader financial services industry looking to strengthen indigenous cyber resilience.

Why this matters for insurance professionals

For insurance professionals, the creation of indigenous AI-based cyber defence systems marks a shift in the skills the sector will value. As insurers like SBI Life move toward building proprietary technology, demand will grow for expertise in AI, cybersecurity, and data science applied to insurance. The hub's focus on talent development means new training pathways and career opportunities in sovereign technology are likely to emerge. Staying informed about initiatives such as the AI Learning Path for Cybersecurity Analysts can help professionals align with the industry's evolving technical needs.
