Serbia Commits $11 Million to AI and Green Technology Research

Serbia has introduced two new funding initiatives totaling over 11 million U.S. dollars to accelerate research in artificial intelligence (AI) and green technologies. These programs are set to fuel innovation and collaboration in key scientific areas over the next one to two years.

Funding Breakdown and Focus Areas

  • AI Research Projects: Allocated 9.84 million U.S. dollars, this program targets 25 to 30 projects over two years. It emphasizes applications in medicine, biotechnology, education, agriculture, and cybersecurity. The initiative is co-financed by the European Union and the World Bank.
  • Green Program for Science-Industry Cooperation: With funding of 1.17 million U.S. dollars from the national budget, this one-year program supports 10 projects aimed at enhancing environmental quality and fostering stronger ties between scientific research and industry.

Driving Practical Impact in Serbia's Green Transition

Nenad Filipovic, director of Serbia's Science Fund, highlighted the AI program's commitment to diverse fields critical for technological advancement and societal benefit.

Minister of Environmental Protection Sara Pavkov emphasized the green program's role in delivering tangible solutions for environmental challenges. She pointed to priorities such as air and soil protection, waste and wastewater management, and biodiversity conservation as key focus areas where the funded projects can make a concrete difference.

These efforts align with Serbia’s broader goals to improve sustainability and promote innovation through close cooperation between researchers and industry partners.

Opportunities for Researchers and Industry Partners

Researchers aiming to contribute to AI or environmental technology can find valuable support within these programs. The funding encourages projects that deliver practical results, fostering environments where science directly benefits industry and ecological well-being.
