Simmons & Simmons launches AI law internship for undergraduates and graduates

Simmons & Simmons has selected eight students for its first AI law internship programme, which runs from 13 to 24 April. The two-week intensive gives participants direct exposure to AI governance work and how law firms deploy AI tools internally.

The firm received more than 400 applications. Selection involved written applications, situational judgment assessments, applied intellect tests, and video interviews.

Participants are undergraduates in their penultimate or final year, along with postgraduate students and recent graduates. The firm will consider top performers for future roles.

What the internship covers

Students will work with Simmons & Simmons' AI experts on real projects affecting AI law and governance. The programme also includes training on how AI is being used to transform legal services delivery.

Peter Lee, partner and AI governance lead, said: "As AI reshapes how legal services are delivered, it is vital that future lawyers and technologists understand both the opportunities and the risks. This internship gives students direct exposure to real AI matters and practical skills that will be central to their careers."

Minesh Tanna, global AI lead, added that the firm wants students to see the breadth of careers available at the intersection of law and technology. "Through our unique internship, students will experience how we advise on complex AI issues and deploy AI tools within the firm, helping to build the next generation of legal professionals," he said.

Broader moves in legal AI

Other major law firms are making similar investments. Eversheds Sutherland launched an AI-focused innovation department in the US in February with 20 staff. Ropes & Gray appointed ex-Meta executive Gretchen Greene as chief of AI strategy in December, while Farrer & Co hired Oliver Jeffcott as head of innovation and AI from Macfarlanes.

For legal professionals looking to build AI skills, AI for Legal resources and an AI Learning Path for Paralegals are available.
