New Government Committee Engages Businesses to Expand AI Adoption

The Singapore government has established a new committee focused on boosting technology use to support economic growth. This group has started discussions with local businesses about expanding and deepening the use of artificial intelligence (AI) across sectors.

Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo emphasized that these conversations aim to identify the critical mass of AI users needed to energize the business ecosystem. “One key focus is how many companies are required to create that critical mass for the ecosystem to be turbocharged,” she said during a visit to PwC’s AI Hub at Marina One.

Committee on Technology and Innovation’s Role

The Committee on Technology and Innovation is part of the Economic Strategy Review, announced by Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong on August 4. It is one of five committees working to create a forward-looking plan that ensures quality opportunities for Singapore’s businesses and workforce.

This committee, led by Minister of State Jasmin Lau and Senior Parliamentary Secretary Goh Hanyan, is tasked with:

  • Broadening AI adoption across companies
  • Increasing the number of people skilled and fluent in AI
  • Encouraging meaningful AI use within specific domains

Minister Teo highlighted the importance of workforce skills, noting the need for employees to become more future-ready through AI fluency. The committee will also explore ways to expand the pool of AI practitioners in Singapore.

Addressing Job Concerns and Economic Impact

Regarding concerns about AI impacting jobs, Minister Teo shared observations from company visits: those with AI skills are more competitive compared to those without. AI tends to complement human work rather than replace it.

Businesses integrating AI can serve customers better and improve productivity and profitability. Minister Teo pointed out that national economic competitiveness depends on broad and deep AI adoption, which can create more growth opportunities for citizens.

Building on Existing Initiatives

The committee’s work complements current government efforts like Smart Nation 2.0 and the National AI Strategy. During the visit to PwC’s AI Hub, ministers observed AI applications in areas such as shipping operations and tax filing.

Senior Parliamentary Secretary Goh Hanyan emphasized the need for inclusive AI benefits. She stated that technology advantages must extend beyond resource-rich companies to include small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

To support smaller firms, the government plans to offer accessible and affordable AI solutions, inspired by past programs like SMEs Go Digital, which helps businesses adopt digital tools to improve their capabilities.

Preparing the Workforce for AI

This initiative highlights the importance of equipping workers with AI skills. Government employees can contribute by supporting these efforts and fostering partnerships with businesses to drive AI adoption.
