Singtel Group Deepens AI Skills Commitment with Renewed Employee Upskilling Initiative
Singtel renews its MOU with UTES to boost AI, sustainability, and power skills training. Nearly 95% of its Singapore workforce have completed foundational AI courses.

Singtel Group Boosts Workforce Skills with Renewed Focus on AI
The Singtel Group has taken a significant step to enhance its workforce capabilities by renewing its Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Union of Telecoms Employees of Singapore (UTES). This renewed agreement reinforces their commitment to equip employees with the necessary skills in artificial intelligence (AI), sustainability, and essential power skills.
Signed during the launch of the company's month-long BIG Learning Fiesta, the MOU supports a broad range of educational talks and workshops aimed at professional and personal growth across the organisation. This initiative builds on previous collaborations, including a S$45 million investment in 2019 to deepen digital skills through the ACT initiative—a people development framework focused on digital transformation.
Key Areas of Focus
- Accelerating upskilling in AI, emerging technologies, sustainability, and power skills
- Empowering employees to create personalized learning pathways with a skills-first approach
- Transforming roles to ensure the workforce is prepared for future challenges
In 2022, Singtel increased its annual training investment to S$20 million and launched Singtel 8George, a learning academy designed to help employees at all levels adapt to technological changes. The renewed MOU complements ongoing efforts to embed AI across the organisation, supporting both adoption and practical implementation.
AI Training Progress and Targets
So far, around 13,000 employees—95% of Singtel's Singapore workforce—have completed foundational AI training covering generative AI, data analytics, and responsible AI use. The goal is to have all Singapore-based staff AI-trained, with 3,000 becoming AI practitioners and 300 AI specialists. This initiative aligns closely with Singapore’s National AI Strategy, which targets training 15,000 AI practitioners nationwide to advance AI innovation.
Leadership Perspective
Singtel Group CEO, Mr Yuen Kuan Moon, emphasized the importance of preparing employees for the AI-driven future. He highlighted the company’s skills-first approach, encouraging employees to build critical capabilities and use technology as a tool to make smarter decisions. This approach aims to enable employees to confidently seize new opportunities and contribute to sustainable business growth.
AI Career Paths and Industry Engagement
Singtel’s AI strategy is built around three roles: adopter, builder-provider, and enabler of AI, spanning connectivity, digital infrastructure, and digital services. This strategy creates clear AI-related career paths within the group. For example, Nxera recently hosted its first Sustainable AI Data Centre Career Day in partnership with industry players, opening new career opportunities related to AI-driven data centres.
For IT professionals interested in AI skill development, exploring comprehensive AI training programs can provide valuable support in keeping up with these trends. Platforms like Complete AI Training offer a range of courses tailored to different skill levels and job roles.
