€1.198m boost for Sligo: AI studio and industrial innovation plans move forward

County Sligo has secured €1,198,016 under the Smart Regions Enterprise Innovation Scheme to accelerate tech-driven growth and jobs. The core piece: €998,016 to build an AI studio at the AIM Centre, Market Yard, including an AI Accelerator Programme focused on helping businesses scope real use cases and integrate AI into production.

Another €200,000 will fund exploration of a Fire Testing Centre and a Heavy Industrial Innovation Hub for wet manufacturing in Sligo.

Fine Gael Minister of State, Frank Feighan, said: "The Smart Regions programme is great news for our area. It will help create new opportunities, support local jobs and encourage innovation in sectors that matter to us. Balanced regional development is one of the core principles of this Government, and this scale of investment into the regions and into Leitrim shows we are putting our money where our mouth is when it comes to supporting local enterprise, supporting entrepreneurs and facilitating very high levels of innovation and excellence right here in this constituency, and across our regions".

Minister of State Marian Harkin said: "The Smart Regions Initiative is building the foundations for a more innovative, sustainable and competitive regional economy. This is a clear demonstration of our commitment to ensuring that every part of Ireland has the tools and support needed to thrive."

Councillor Thomas Walsh said: "This scale of investment into Sligo shows we are putting our money where our mouth is when it comes to supporting local enterprise, supporting entrepreneurs and facilitating very high levels of innovation and excellence right here in Sligo and across our regions."

What this means for engineers, data teams, and founders

The AI studio and accelerator at the AIM Centre aim to move AI from slide decks to shipped features. Expect hands-on help with problem framing, quick-turn prototypes, and the messy middle of integration: data readiness, model selection, performance baselines, security, and rollout.

  • Use-case discovery: Identify processes with measurable ROI (claims triage, document intake, forecasting, anomaly detection, support automation).
  • Integration support: Model evaluation, prompt pipelines, API gateways, observability, and rollback plans.
  • MLOps fundamentals: Data versioning, evaluations, bias checks, and continuous improvement loops.
  • Change management: Training for product, ops, and compliance to keep rollouts safe and maintainable.

How to prep your team before applications open

  • List 2-3 high-impact, low-risk use cases. Define success metrics (cost per ticket, lead time, error rate, CSAT).
  • Audit your data: access, quality, governance, retention, and privacy constraints.
  • Pick a starting stack: managed LLMs vs. open models, vector store choice, evaluation framework, and security model.
  • Draft a 6-10 week pilot plan with milestones, owners, budget, and a clear "stop or scale" decision gate.
  • Line up compliance: DPIA, model audit notes, logging policies, and human-in-the-loop checkpoints.

Industrial testing and wet manufacturing: why it matters for devs

The €200,000 scoping fund for a Fire Testing Centre and Heavy Industrial Innovation Hub could attract R&D-heavy manufacturers and testing workloads to Sligo. That creates demand for IoT integrations, telemetry pipelines, digital twin experiments, and analytics dashboards that connect lab results to factory systems.

  • Data engineering opportunities: streaming ingestion, time-series storage, and secure data sharing with partners.
  • Simulation and QA: model-driven testing, scenario generation, and result traceability.
  • Compliance tech: audit trails, certifications, and reporting automation for industry standards.
