Smart Africa Drives Unified AI Policy Across the Continent

On July 9, 2025, at the AI for Good Summit in Geneva, Smart Africa gathered representatives from over ten African governments to introduce a harmonised Model AI Policy Framework. This framework targets the 70% of African nations that have yet to establish national AI strategies, offering clear guidance to accelerate AI governance.

Countries such as Kenya, Algeria, and Ghana contributed valuable insights by sharing their experiences in developing and implementing AI policies. Their input highlights practical approaches that other governments can adapt to local contexts.

Global partners including the World Bank, ITU, and UNESCO committed to providing tools and technical support to fast-track the adoption and execution of these AI strategies. This collaboration strengthens the foundation for cohesive AI governance across Africa.

Building a Collaborative AI Community

Following the policy framework launch, Smart Africa will establish a Community of Practice. This initiative will enable peer learning among African governments, fostering ongoing collaboration and knowledge exchange on AI governance challenges and solutions.

Such a community ensures that Africa contributes as a co-creator in the global AI ecosystem, rather than merely a consumer of AI technologies. It encourages governments to engage proactively in shaping policies that reflect the continent’s priorities and values.
