Japan's Tech Giants Form AI Company to Challenge U.S. and Chinese Competitors

SoftBank, NEC, Sony, and Honda have established a new company to develop high-performance artificial intelligence for domestic use, according to informed sources. Each company holds a stake exceeding 10 percent, with additional firms in talks to invest as minority shareholders.

The venture aims to make advanced AI available across Japanese industry, directly competing with established players from the U.S. and China.

Development and Funding

Engineers from SoftBank and AI developer Preferred Networks will lead the development effort. The company plans to apply for funding through Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), which is distributing 1 trillion yen over five years beginning in fiscal 2026.

NEDO opened applications for its AI development support program in late March. The funding represents a significant government commitment to domestic AI capabilities.

What This Means for Development Teams

For IT and development professionals, this signals expanding access to Japanese-built AI infrastructure. Rather than relying solely on foreign platforms, organizations may gain options for deploying AI systems developed locally.

The involvement of multiple major corporations suggests the technology will target enterprise use cases. Developers should expect tools designed for broad integration across industries rather than specialized applications.
