South Africa Releases Draft National AI Policy for Public Comment
The South African government published a draft national artificial intelligence policy on Friday, opening it for public feedback before final approval. The Communications and Digital Technologies Department released the policy as part of efforts to position the country as a continental leader in AI innovation while managing ethical and economic risks.
The policy rests on six pillars: capacity and talent development; AI for inclusive growth and job creation; responsible governance; ethical and inclusive AI; cultural preservation and international integration; and human-centred deployment.
Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said the framework aims to promote responsible development and ethical deployment of AI across the economy.
What Government Officials Should Know
The draft policy signals how the government intends to regulate AI adoption across public and private sectors. Officials involved in policy implementation or departmental AI strategy should review the document to understand compliance expectations and opportunities for integration within their agencies.
The public comment period allows stakeholders to shape the final version before it becomes binding policy. Government bodies may need to prepare for new AI governance requirements once the policy is finalized.
For those developing or advising on AI policy, the AI Learning Path for Policy Makers covers governance frameworks and data-driven decision-making relevant to public sector implementation. Additional resources on AI for Government address policy analysis and administration topics aligned with the national strategy.
The full draft policy is available through the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies. Government agencies should monitor the public comment deadline and plan accordingly for compliance once the policy takes effect.
