Spielberg: AI Should Enhance Filmmaking, Not Replace Creators

Steven Spielberg said he opposes using artificial intelligence to replace creative professionals, drawing a line as Hollywood studios and unions debate the technology's role in production.

"I am not for AI that replaces a creative individual," Spielberg said at the SXSW Film & TV Festival in Austin this week. He sees AI as a potential tool for specific filmmaking tasks, but human creators must remain central to storytelling.

His Approach: Keep the Writers' Room Full

Spielberg has not used AI in any of his films. He pointed to his writers' rooms as evidence of his position: "All the seats are occupied. There's not an empty chair with a laptop in front of it."

His stance reflects broader uncertainty across the industry. Netflix said last month that AI should "empower storytellers, not replace them." The SAG-AFTRA union condemned the use of ByteDance's Seedance 2.0 AI video model for unauthorized purposes in February.

New Projects Built on Human Collaboration

Spielberg's upcoming work demonstrates his commitment to human partnerships. His sci-fi thriller "Disclosure Day" arrives June 12 with writer David Koepp, cinematographer Janusz Kamiński, and composer John Williams-the same collaborators he has worked with across multiple projects.

He also serves as executive producer on Apple TV+'s psychological thriller "Cape Fear," debuting June 5. "I love doing that in collaboration with crew, but also especially with actors," Spielberg said at SXSW.

Tools That Support Rather Than Replace

Some AI tools are designed to support creative work without removing human decision-making. Products like RAD help creative teams refine scripts, marketing campaigns, and workflows while keeping storytellers in control of the final product.

For professionals in creative fields, understanding how to work alongside these tools-rather than against them-is becoming part of the job. Learn more about AI for Creatives and how Generative Video tools fit into modern production workflows.
