Subaru Partners with HPE to Boost AI in Next-Gen EyeSight Driver Assist
Subaru has selected HPE Cray XD670 servers to enhance its AI-driven image recognition technology for the upcoming EyeSight driver assist system. This move supports Subaru’s focus on improving preventive safety and delivering greater value to customers.
The HPE Cray XD670 servers, equipped with energy-efficient direct liquid cooling, are set to accelerate AI algorithm optimization, model training, and inferencing. These improvements are critical for advancing Subaru’s next-generation EyeSight system, which is part of the company’s goal to eliminate fatal traffic accidents by 2030.
Enhancing Safety Through AI and Image Recognition
EyeSight uses stereo cameras to capture images, enabling the system to measure distances and classify objects with AI. Subaru has developed stereo camera-based image recognition for over 35 years and is now integrating AI to improve preventive safety significantly.
Deploying HPE Cray XD670 servers on-premises allows Subaru to boost computing power for AI development, supporting faster iterations of AI models. The servers feature NVIDIA H200 GPUs connected via NVIDIA NVLink, enabling high-performance training and inference.

The HPE Cray XD670 is designed for GPU-accelerated workloads, excelling in computer vision and large language model (LLM) tasks. It ranks highly in MLPerf Inference v5.0 benchmarks, demonstrating its capability to handle demanding AI tasks efficiently.
Direct liquid cooling in the system reduces energy consumption while maintaining optimal performance, a critical factor in sustaining intensive AI computations.
Subaru’s AI Development Strategy
Subaru’s SUBARU Lab, established in 2020, centralizes research and AI development for advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). The lab collects real-world video data globally to train AI models that run on these powerful HPE servers.
Takashi Kanai, Deputy Chief of SUBARU Lab, highlights that the new HPE infrastructure delivers twice the performance of previous systems, enabling better utilization of GPU resources and faster AI development cycles.
