Subaru Partners with HPE to Boost AI for Next-Gen EyeSight Driver Assist
Subaru has selected HPE Cray XD670 servers to accelerate AI development for its upcoming EyeSight driver assist system. This collaboration aims to strengthen Subaru’s preventive safety measures by optimizing AI-driven image recognition technology using powerful GPU-accelerated computing.
The HPE Cray XD670 servers, equipped with energy-efficient direct liquid cooling and eight NVIDIA H200 GPUs, enhance Subaru’s ability to train AI models and perform inferencing at scale. This upgrade is critical for advancing the EyeSight system, which combines stereo camera data with AI to precisely measure and classify objects in real-world driving conditions.
Enhancing Safety Through AI
Subaru's commitment to safety is well established, with a goal of zero fatal traffic accidents by 2030. The next-generation EyeSight system builds on over 35 years of stereo camera-based image recognition technology. By integrating AI, Subaru aims to improve object detection accuracy and vehicle safety across diverse scenarios.
EyeSight’s current success is reflected in its notably low rear-end collision rates, demonstrating the effectiveness of Subaru’s driver assistance technologies. The enhanced AI capabilities powered by HPE servers will further reduce risks on the road.
Optimizing AI Development Infrastructure
Subaru’s SUBARU Lab, established in 2020, serves as the strategic hub for developing AI-based image recognition and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). The lab collects global driving video data to train and fine-tune AI algorithms. The deployment of HPE Cray XD670 servers on-premises significantly boosts computing power, enabling faster model iterations and more efficient use of GPU resources.
Takashi Kanai, Deputy Chief of SUBARU Lab and General Manager of ADAS Development, highlighted that the new system delivers twice the performance of Subaru’s previous setup, accelerating AI model development.
