Taiwan Advances AI and Robotics with New National Development Plan
Premier Cho Jung-tai (卓榮泰) announced that Taiwan's “Ten Major AI Infrastructure Projects” will be included in next year’s national budget. This move highlights the government’s commitment to pushing forward smart manufacturing and industrial upgrading.
The announcement came during the opening of the Taiwan Automation Intelligence and Robot Show and Automation Taipei, where Cho emphasized Taiwan’s solid foundation in smart manufacturing and automation.
Focus Areas of the Plan
The plan centers on three key areas:
- Smart applications
- Core technologies
- Infrastructure
Core technologies targeted include silicon photonics, quantum computing, and robotics. The goal is to position Taiwan as a critical hub in the global supply chain.
Key Projects and Investments
The initiative involves developing sovereign AI systems, boosting computing power, and cultivating top-tier talent. The government plans to invest over NT$100 billion (US$3.3 billion) to support these efforts.
Significant projects include:
- A smart robotics park in Liuying
- A research center in Shalun
- An innovation and applications hub in Liujia, Tainan
These facilities aim to create an integrated industrial base, strengthening Taiwan’s AI and robotics ecosystem.
Building an Intelligent Living Circle
Premier Cho highlighted that these projects open vast opportunities for Taiwan. The ultimate goal is to build an “intelligent living circle” where smart technologies improve daily life across all sectors.
Addressing Global Trade Challenges
Cho also addressed global trade uncertainties, noting that Taiwan’s traditional industries, such as machine tools, must adopt digital and AI upgrades to maintain competitiveness. He acknowledged challenges from new U.S. trade policies and mentioned ongoing tariff negotiations.
To bolster economic and social resilience, the Cabinet proposed amendments to the Special Act for Strengthening Economic, Social, and National Security Resilience. This includes an additional NT$20 billion (US$667 million) in funding, bringing total support to over NT$93 billion (US$3.1 billion), pending legislative approval.
Opportunities for IT and Development Professionals
This national plan presents significant opportunities for professionals in AI, robotics, and automation. Skilled developers, engineers, and researchers will find new projects and funding streams that support innovation and career growth.
