A government school teacher in Telangana has developed a free AI-powered mobile app to improve foundational literacy and numeracy among primary students. Brungi Prasannakumar released the FLN Mithra app on July 12, 2026, targeting students in classes 1 to 5 with personalized learning in Telugu, English, and Mathematics. The tool arrives as government schools seek cost-effective ways to meet the National Education Policy 2020's emphasis on competency-based learning.
The app uses AI to generate quizzes, activities, and learning pathways tailored to each child's level. It includes educational games, worksheets, reading comprehension exercises, oral reading fluency practice, and problem-solving tasks. Teachers and parents can track progress through instant feedback and individual student dashboards.
Separate access for teachers, students, and parents
Prasannakumar built the platform with distinct login systems for teachers, students, and parents, creating a single interface for classroom teaching, home learning, assessment, and monitoring. He developed the application through his own research and personal finances, without corporate backing. "My objective is to make quality digital education accessible to children studying in government primary schools without any cost," he said.
Recognition from Samagra Shiksha
Samagra Shiksha Joint Director A Usha Rani felicitated Prasannakumar at the Director of School Education office in Hyderabad, acknowledging his contribution to foundational learning. The initiative directly supports the Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) mission and the National Education Policy 2020 by providing personalized, competency-based learning experiences for young learners.
Why this matters for educators
The FLN Mithra app demonstrates how individual teachers can use AI to address learning gaps without waiting for top-down initiatives. For education professionals, it's a concrete example of a low-cost, teacher-driven digital tool that aligns with national policy goals. The broader trend of AI in classrooms is covered in resources like AI for Education. Exploring similar AI learning paths, such as an AI Learning Path for Primary School Teachers, can help educators build their own tools and integrate technology into early-grade instruction.
