Insurance Industry Gets New AI Credential
The Institutes Designations launched the Associate in Insurance AI (AIAI) credential on Tuesday, offering insurance professionals formal training in applying artificial intelligence to underwriting, claims, customer service, and risk assessment.
The move responds to industry demand. A 2025 survey by the International Insurance Society found two-thirds of insurance executives ranked AI as their top technology priority.
What the Designation Covers
The program consists of three courses plus an ethics requirement focused on AI use in insurance. The curriculum teaches professionals how to interpret AI-driven insights and recognize when human judgment should override automated outputs.
The Institutes emphasized that the designation addresses AI limitations, including the risks of overreliance on automated tools. Professionals learn when to trust AI recommendations and when to question them.
The credential targets professionals at all career stages, from entry-level employees to senior leaders. The organization positioned it as a way for the workforce to adapt as AI adoption accelerates across the industry.
Who's Behind It
The Institutes, a nonprofit organization with more than 115 years in risk management and insurance education, developed the credential in-house. Adam Carmichael, president of The Institutes Knowledge Group, said the designation helps professionals "apply AI responsibly within the industry."
