AI should sharpen judgment, not replace it. It should make it easier to care, not add noise. Design for clinicians, patients, and caregivers-not just metrics.
- Keep a human-in-the-loop for high-risk or irreversible actions.
- Show confidence intervals, rationale, and evidence links-no blind suggestions.
- Measure alert fatigue and time-to-insight; reduce clicks and non-actionable prompts.
- Run in shadow mode before go-live. Prove safety and value in your environment.
Metrics That Matter
Progress isn't model AUC in a slide deck. It's fewer harms, better outcomes, and narrower gaps.
- Clinical: mortality, readmissions, LOS, complications, adverse events.
- Process: turnaround times, throughput, clinician time reclaimed.
- Experience: patient trust scores, complaint trends, staff satisfaction.
- Equity: disparity reduction across subgroups; publish trends and act when gaps grow.
- Set stop rules: if harm or inequity crosses a threshold, halt and fix.
