UGM Introduces Healthy Relationship Handbook and AI-Based English Learning Platform
Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has launched two important initiatives to support a healthy, inclusive, and fair campus environment: the Healthy Relationship Handbook and the UGM AI English language platform (UGM AI). The launch event took place at UGM’s Innovation and Creativity Hub (GIK UGM) on July 17.
UGM Rector Professor Ova Emilia highlighted that the Healthy Relationship Handbook is a product of collective efforts to promote healthy social interactions within the university community. She explained, “Our students, staff, and lecturers come from diverse backgrounds. Without clear guidance, unhealthy relationships can develop. This handbook is intended as a resource for nurturing harmonious and inclusive relationships across campus.”
Building Safe and Inclusive Relationships
Vice Rector for Education and Teaching, Professor Wening Udasmoro, who led the handbook’s development, described it as UGM’s first formal guide for fostering safe, violence-free relationships. The handbook combines theoretical insights with practical examples and illustrations to make the content accessible and actionable.
Professor Udasmoro added that the handbook was the result of months of collaboration among experts from various fields. The goal is to raise awareness about respecting everyone on campus, regardless of age, status, or background.
UGM AI: Supporting English Language Skills
Alongside the handbook, UGM introduced UGM AI, an artificial intelligence-powered platform for English language learning. The platform was developed by a team from the Faculty of Cultural Sciences and integrates various learning modules accessible through UGM Online.
Dr. Mardhani Riasetiawan, Head of UGM’s Digital Transformation Bureau, explained that UGM AI starts with a screening test to determine each student’s English proficiency. Students then engage with tailored materials and exercises, complete placement tests, and receive personalized feedback along with additional resources.
This platform aims to provide equitable opportunities for all students to improve their language skills effectively. Plans are underway to expand UGM AI to other foreign languages and develop it into an AI-based Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) for flexible, independent learning.
Commitment to Inclusive and Just Education
The introduction of both the Healthy Relationship Handbook and UGM AI reflects the university’s dedication to creating a just academic environment and inclusive learning ecosystem. These tools support academic success while reinforcing UGM’s core values of respect and inclusivity.
Education professionals looking to support similar initiatives can consider integrating clear guidelines on social relationships and leveraging AI-powered platforms to enhance language learning. Such efforts contribute to healthier campus communities and improved global competencies.
