UH Mānoa Introduces Graduate Programs in AI and Data Science
The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa has launched two new graduate programs aimed at preparing students and professionals for careers in artificial intelligence (AI) and data science:
- Graduate Certificate (GCERT) in Applied Computing: Artificial Intelligence and Data Science Track
- Professional Master’s in Computer Science (PMCS) Artificial Intelligence and Data Science Track
Both programs offer flexible formats to accommodate working professionals and students across the UH System.
Department Chair Guylaine Poisson emphasized the importance of accessibility: “Our goal is to make computing education more accessible, especially for those who need flexibility to upskill, or may have never seen themselves in this field before.” These programs respond to the increasing demand for tech-savvy professionals in Hawaiʻi and beyond.
The programs are administered through UH Mānoa’s Outreach College and taught by faculty from the Information and Computer Sciences (ICS) department within the College of Natural Sciences.
Acting Dean Philip Williams commented, “These programs provide pathways for students of all skill levels to deepen their AI knowledge and gain industry experience at a time when this technology is transforming every sector.” The initiative has sparked strong interest from both community members and industry partners who recognize the growing need for AI expertise in Hawaiʻi.
UH President Wendy Hensel highlighted the university’s commitment: “Artificial intelligence and data science are transforming every field, and we’re committed to ensuring our students and working professionals have the skills to lead in this evolving environment.”
Graduate Certificate in Applied Computing: AI and Data Science Track
This 15-credit certificate is the first of its kind in the state and targets students without a computer science background. Offered primarily online, the program can be completed within one year and focuses on practical, career-relevant skills in AI and data science.
Coursework includes real-world applications with local case studies addressing Hawaiʻi’s challenges in healthcare, environmental science, digital marketing, and cybersecurity.
The certificate welcomes anyone with a bachelor’s degree, especially working professionals looking to upskill or move into tech roles. Applicants must show foundational programming experience in a modern language such as Python or Java. This can be demonstrated through prior coursework or at least three years of relevant work or project experience.
Professional Master’s in Computer Science: AI and Data Science Track
This two-year master’s program builds on the graduate certificate foundation and offers advanced technical training in AI and data science. It is intended for students with a computer science background or those who have completed the GCERT with strong academic results.
The program’s hybrid format provides flexibility for students balancing careers and other commitments. The UH Board of Regents Committee on Student Success granted provisional approval on April 17.
Graduates from either program can pursue careers as AI specialists or data scientists. Both programs also connect students with local employers and internship opportunities, supporting career paths in Hawaiʻi and remote tech roles.
Outreach College Interim Dean Timothy Slaughter noted, “By offering multiple entry points and stackable credentials, we’re expanding educational access beyond traditional paths and creating new bridges between the university and the broader community.”
Applications are open now for fall 2025 classes. The deadline to apply is August 1, 2025. Learn more and submit applications through the Outreach College website.
