UK Government Launches AI Exemplar Products for Key Departments
Peter Kyle, the UK’s Technology Secretary, has introduced a new range of AI products aimed at improving services across government sectors such as education, justice, and the NHS. Backed by the Prime Minister, the AI Exemplars Programme focuses on practical applications of AI that deliver measurable benefits.
AI in Education: Supporting Teachers and Students
Within the Department for Education, one notable initiative is the Education Content Store. This provides the infrastructure to develop AI tools aligned with educational standards and evidence-based methods. These tools are intended to reduce administrative burdens on educators, freeing up time for direct teaching and student support.
Key Objectives of the AI Exemplar Portfolio
- Progress multiple AI use cases simultaneously
- Learn quickly from both successes and setbacks
- Take responsibility while maximising return on investment
- Enable public sector teams to share AI adoption insights
- Create opportunities to scale AI across government departments
The programme follows the “Scan > Pilot > Scale” approach from the government’s AI Opportunities Plan. This involves identifying promising AI technologies, testing solutions in real-world settings, and then scaling successful projects throughout government.
Learning from Experience
All outcomes from the AI Exemplars—whether successful or not—will be documented. This transparency helps identify which approaches work best and builds networks across departments to share best practices.
The Government Digital Service highlights that the programme does not guarantee every project will succeed. Instead, it commits to learning quickly, adapting plans, and steadily improving the government’s ability to deliver public services enhanced by AI.
