UK Department for Education Launches AI Training and Support for Schools and Colleges

The UK Department for Education has released free training and guidance materials to help education staff use AI safely, effectively, and ethically. These resources were developed by Chiltern Learning Trust in partnership with the Chartered College of Teaching, the professional body for teachers and school leaders.

The materials are aimed at teachers, leaders, and other education professionals. They include activity-focused slides, video presentations with transcripts, summaries, reflective planning templates, and multiple-choice questions. The content can be adapted for individual or group use and suits different levels of AI knowledge. Module 3, which covers safety, is recommended for all staff regardless of prior experience.

Certification Opportunities Linked to Chartered Teacher Status

Those who complete the training can take a free, multiple-choice certified assessment provided by the Chartered College of Teaching. Passing this assessment awards five credits toward Chartered Teacher Status and formally recognises competence in AI use within education. The assessment covers:

  • Understanding AI in education
  • Interacting with generative AI
  • Developing safe use of generative AI
  • Use cases of AI in education

Additionally, a free online journal and case studies demonstrate how schools are currently integrating AI tools in practice. These resources help staff appreciate both the benefits and risks involved with AI in classrooms and administrative tasks.

Dr. Cat Scutt, Deputy CEO for Education and Research at the Chartered College of Teaching, states, β€œAI has huge potential in education, but it also comes with huge risks. The only way to address the risks and maximise the opportunities is for the education workforce to be fully confident and competent in safe and effective use of AI. These materials are vital to helping provide the training, research, support and examples of practice that early years settings, schools and colleges need to develop their staff members’ expertise.”

For educators interested in expanding their AI skills further, comprehensive courses and certifications are available at Complete AI Training.
