UN Officials Visit Fudan University to Strengthen AI Collaboration
Two senior United Nations delegations visited Fudan University in Shanghai on Sunday to discuss recent advancements in artificial intelligence and explore deeper cooperation between the UN and the university. This visit followed the official launch of the Center for Global AI Innovation Governance at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference held in Shanghai.
The delegations were led by Amandeep Singh Gill, United Nations undersecretary-general and special envoy for digital and emerging technologies, and Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, UN undersecretary-general and executive secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).
Shared Vision for Ethical and Inclusive AI Development
During his meeting with Gill, Jin Li, president of Fudan University and academician with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, emphasized a shared belief between the university and the UN: AI progress should focus on both technological advancement and ethical responsibility. Jin highlighted Fudan’s commitment to AI education and its application in scientific research fields such as materials science, life sciences, and earth sciences, all aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Gill described the visit as a foundation for future collaboration. He expressed hope that Fudan’s expertise in AI innovation governance would support efforts to build AI capacity globally.
Advancing AI Education, Research, and Technology Transfer
In a separate discussion, Chen Zhimin, vice-president of Fudan University, shared updates on the university’s progress in AI education, research, and technology transfer with Alisjahbana and her team. He detailed the concept behind the Center for Global AI Innovation Governance, highlighting its role in bridging AI gaps and delivering public goods internationally.
Alisjahbana welcomed the early achievements of the center and expressed optimism about its potential to strengthen collaboration between industry, academia, and research institutions within the framework of global AI innovation governance.
Center for Global AI Innovation Governance: A Platform for Global Cooperation
Founded by Fudan University, the Center for Global AI Innovation Governance focuses on leveraging China’s experiences with global perspectives to provide international public goods. Its mission includes capacity building and coordinating governance efforts, with special attention to countries in the Global South.
The center plans to utilize Fudan’s strengths in AI governance, interdisciplinary research, and international cooperation networks to create a platform linking China with global partners.
