Union Information Minister Advocates for Effective AI Use in Media
On September 6, 2025, Union Minister U Maung Maung Ohn spoke at the opening ceremony of the 2025 Global South Media and Think Tank Forum in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China. The forum gathered media leaders and officials from countries in the Global South to discuss cooperation and technological advancements in media.
The Myanmar delegation, led by the Union Minister for Information, attended the event held at the Intercontinental Hotel. Attendees viewed displays of Yunnan products and ancient artworks, and enjoyed a cultural performance by Yunnan’s dance troupe. Key figures such as Wang Ning, Yunnan Province Party Secretary, Hu Heping from the Communist Party of China Central Committee, and Fu Hua, President of Xinhua News Agency, joined discussions on enhancing media collaboration across the Global South.
Strengthening Myanmar-China Ties Through Rescue Cooperation
A rescue team leader shared firsthand accounts of the Yunnan rescue team’s efforts in Myanmar following the Mandalay earthquake. The presentation highlighted the effective collaboration between Chinese and Myanmar rescue teams, accompanied by photos that reflected the strong friendship between the two countries. The Director of the Fire Services Department from Myanmar’s Ministry of Home Affairs also shared experiences and insights gained from joint rescue activities.
AI Technology: Opportunities and Challenges in Media
During the forum’s high-level preliminary meeting, Union Minister U Maung Maung Ohn emphasized the rapid transformation of the media sector due to modern technologies, especially artificial intelligence (AI). He pointed out that AI has made tasks easier that were once challenging, but also brought forward legal and ethical concerns.
The Minister stressed the importance of using AI responsibly in media to ensure compliance with regulations, reduce the digital divide, and encourage cooperation among Global South countries. He expressed Myanmar’s readiness to deepen partnerships with media organizations across these nations to foster new exchanges and collaborations.
Combating Misinformation Through Regional Cooperation
Addressing the spread of fake news and misinformation, the Minister called for collective efforts to ensure accurate information reaches the public. Such collaboration would promote mutual understanding, strengthen friendships, and contribute to greater peace and harmony.
New Agreements on Media Cooperation
At the forum, the Union Minister signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) on media cooperation with Chinese Information Minister Ms. Zeng Yan. Six departments and organizations, including Myanmar Radio and Television (MRTV) and Yunnan Media Group (YMG), formalized this agreement during a digital signing ceremony.
Further discussions took place in the Yunnan-Myanmar information cooperation workshop. Topics included faster news data exchange, sharing broadcasting plans, and print media collaboration. The event concluded with an exchange of gifts between the two Information Ministers.
