University of Chicago Gets $50M Gift to Build Interdisciplinary AI Faculty
The University of Chicago will use a $50 million donation to recruit 20 scholars across multiple disciplines who are actively using artificial intelligence in their work. The gift from trustee Rika Mansueto and her husband Joe, founder of investment research firm Morningstar, launches the Mansueto Faculty of Mind and Machine Challenge.
The challenge aims to raise nearly $200 million total to bring in faculty from the arts, social sciences, medicine, business and law. The university will also invest in broader AI research and education programs.
Teaching Beyond Technical Skills
The initiative focuses on how students learn to work with, without, and about machines. Rika Mansueto said the work must rest on more than technical skill.
"As artificial intelligence reshapes nearly every field, it's essential that this work be grounded not just in technical excellence, but in a deep understanding of human judgment, responsibility and purpose," she said.
University President Paul Alivisatos framed the gift as timely. "This is a signal period in intellectual history, and this gift will greatly advance the University as it seeks to shape advances in human thought during this era of AI and machine learning," he said.
Interdisciplinary Focus
The university's approach differs from programs that treat AI as a standalone technical field. By recruiting scholars across disciplines, the university aims to show how AI applies to existing work in law, medicine, business and the arts.
