University of Memphis adds AI concentration to engineering degree
The University of Memphis will launch a new concentration in applied artificial intelligence this fall, part of its Bachelor of Applied Science program through the Polytechnic@UofM unit.
The concentration is designed to prepare students to deploy, evaluate, and govern AI tools within their industries-not to train them as AI developers. The curriculum covers AI literacy, AI tools, and ethics.
David Russomanno, U of M provost, said the rapid pace of AI development and workforce demands prompted the university to move quickly. "We were thrilled to have the support of the Tennessee Higher Education Commission and THEC Executive Director Dr. Steven Gentile to approve our request," Russomanno said.
Who can enroll
The concentration is flexible and open to traditional four-year students, community college students at Tennessee College of Applied Technology, transfer students, and working professionals.
Polytechnic@UofM, launched in July 2025 as a subunit of the Herff College of Engineering, focuses on workforce-aligned degree pathways.
Relevance for educators
As AI tools become standard across industries, educators increasingly need to understand how these systems work and their limitations. Resources like AI for Education and the AI Learning Path for Teachers can help education professionals stay current with the technology reshaping their field and workplaces.
