University of Phoenix partners with OpenAI to integrate AI into learning and workforce programs

University of Phoenix today announced a collaboration with OpenAI to integrate artificial intelligence across its teaching, student services, and operations, aiming to help working adult learners build practical AI skills they can use immediately on the job. The partnership will focus on embedding AI literacy into degree programs, enhancing career services, and generating research insights into workforce outcomes-all while serving a student body with an average age of 38, already balancing careers and education.

Serving the working adult learner

University of Phoenix students are working adults who are actively employed while pursuing degrees. The collaboration will explore ways to help these learners develop AI fluency and workplace-ready skills that can be applied directly in their current roles. Because students put new knowledge into practice right away, the initiative creates an opportunity to observe and measure how AI-enabled learning influences workplace performance in real time.

"Artificial intelligence represents one of the most significant shifts in the future of work since the emergence of the internet," said Chris Lynne, Chief Executive Officer of Phoenix Education Partners and President of University of Phoenix. "Our students aren't preparing for tomorrow's workforce-they're already shaping today's. Together with OpenAI, University of Phoenix has an opportunity to help working adults build practical AI capabilities they can immediately apply in their careers while advancing new understanding of how AI can improve learning, career mobility and workforce success."

AI integration across the institution

The collaboration will explore AI applications in teaching and learning, faculty productivity, career services, and administrative processes. The university plans to expand AI skills development across academic programs and introduce AI-powered tools that personalize student support. Career services will also use AI to help learners identify emerging workforce demands and navigate career pathways.

"AI has the greatest impact when institutions combine access to advanced technology with the expertise, vision and support needed to put it to work in meaningful ways," said Kevin Mills, Head of Education Go-to-Market at OpenAI. "We're excited to collaborate with the University of Phoenix to expand access to ChatGPT Edu while helping foster the capabilities, culture and confidence needed to accelerate responsible AI adoption across the institution."

The university already integrates AI across more than 20 degree programs, offers AI-powered academic support through its Phoenix Academic Support System, and provides students with access to Microsoft Copilot. Its Center for AI Resources serves as a hub for AI literacy and responsible use. These efforts reflect a broader trend in AI for Education, as institutions embed AI competencies into curriculum and support systems.

Why this matters for education professionals

For educators and administrators, the University of Phoenix collaboration demonstrates a model for integrating AI into higher education that prioritizes working adults. The focus on immediate skill application and real-time research feedback offers a blueprint for designing AI initiatives that align with workforce needs. Education professionals can draw on this approach to build AI literacy into existing programs, particularly for non-traditional students who need practical, job-relevant training.
