UT Austin Sets Clear Guidelines for Responsible AI Use in Education

The University of Texas at Austin is establishing a detailed framework for integrating artificial intelligence (AI) tools into teaching and learning. With generative AI tools becoming more accessible, the university recognizes the need for clear practices that support educational goals without compromising academic integrity.

Dr. Julie Schell, assistant vice provost and director of the Office of Academic Technology, explained that early on, UT Austin introduced the “AI Forward, AI Responsible” initiative. This encouraged educators to engage with AI tools thoughtfully, focusing on how these technologies can support rather than undermine learning.

Moving Beyond Basic Guidelines

Since the launch of ChatGPT three years ago, many institutions provided initial advice on AI use. Now, UT Austin’s team of ten faculty and staff members has developed a more comprehensive set of principles tailored to its community, known as the Forty Acres.

The working group emphasized two main goals:

  • Preventing cheating through clear policies
  • Designing learning experiences that integrate AI responsibly

Eight Guiding Principles for Responsible AI Adoption

The new framework rests on eight core principles that emphasize:

  • Understanding AI’s impact on higher education
  • Recognizing both the advantages and limitations of AI tools
  • Ensuring AI enhances human relationships and agency rather than replacing them
  • Aligning AI use with UT Austin’s honor code and institutional values
  • Implementing safeguards to protect individual rights and safety

These principles aim to provide clear direction for educators and students making decisions about AI in the classroom.

Community Feedback and Implementation

The university is currently inviting feedback on the draft guidelines through the end of July. Finalized recommendations will be in place for the upcoming fall semester.

For educators interested in exploring AI tools further or seeking training on responsible AI integration, resources such as Complete AI Training offer up-to-date courses and practical knowledge.
