Uttar Pradesh Launches AI-Powered Road Safety Project with Centre’s Approval

The Government of Uttar Pradesh has received approval from the Centre to initiate a pilot project focused on improving road safety using artificial intelligence. This initiative will be executed at zero cost by ITI Limited, a public sector enterprise, in collaboration with mLogica. The project aims to address road hazards by analyzing vehicle telematics, weather patterns, crash reports, and traffic blackspots.

Objective and Scope of the Project

The primary goal is to identify the root causes of road accidents through data-driven research and analytics. These insights will assist the state transport department in refining its policies to reduce fatal car crashes effectively.

UP’s government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has already allocated Rs 10 crore in the state budget for FY 2025–26 to support this data-centric administrative approach.

Integration and Future Expansion

Once the pilot testing proves successful, the AI system will be expanded to cover critical transport services. These include:

  • Faceless licence and permit systems
  • Modernisation of enforcement mechanisms
  • Revenue collection
  • e-Challan processing
  • The Vahan-Sarathi platform

This expansion aims to position Uttar Pradesh as a leader in tech-enabled governance, delivering transparent, efficient, and scientifically backed transport services to citizens.

Enhanced Interoperability and Automation

The AI engine will enable seamless interoperability across multiple transport-related databases, such as revenue administration, e-challan systems, and vehicle registration records. This will facilitate automated alerts and risk scoring concerning tax liabilities, fee payments, and document validity, helping streamline administrative workflows.

Current Implementation Status

Transport Commissioner Brajesh Narayan Singh confirmed that implementation work has already started. The ITI - mLogica team is actively collaborating with the transport department’s IT, enforcement, and road safety divisions to ensure smooth execution.

Professionals working in IT and development can follow this project as a significant example of AI integration within government systems, showing how data analytics and automation can improve public safety and administrative efficiency.
