Uttar Pradesh deploys AI tools across public health programs

The Government of Uttar Pradesh and Wadhwani AI have mapped out a rollout plan for seven AI-powered solutions across the state's health system. The partnership targets tuberculosis care, telemedicine, maternal and child health, and eye screening-areas where frontline workers need faster, more reliable decision support.

The collaboration sits within the UP AI Mission, a three-year state initiative to build AI capacity across governance, healthcare, and agriculture.

Tuberculosis screening and risk mapping

Cough Against TB (CATB) is a mobile application that analyzes cough sounds and symptoms to identify people with suspected pulmonary TB. Frontline workers can run the screening in community settings without waiting for lab results.

A second tool, Vulnerability Mapping for Tuberculosis (VMTB), uses geospatial analysis to flag high-risk locations by combining TB program data with environmental and health indicators. This helps authorities focus case-finding efforts where they're most needed.

A third system, Prediction of Adverse TB Outcomes (PATO), identifies patients at risk of treatment failure or complications at the start of therapy. Early identification allows clinicians to intervene before outcomes worsen or drug resistance develops.

Clinical support and remote care

The Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) gives clinicians structured patient data and AI-generated differential diagnosis options during telemedicine consultations. The tool aims to standardize care quality across primary health centers.

Health Vaani, a voice and text assistant, gives frontline workers instant access to government-approved health guidelines. Workers can ask questions and get answers without leaving the field.

Eye and newborn health

MadhuNetrAI screens retinal images to detect diabetic retinopathy, a leading cause of preventable blindness. The tool flags cases needing specialist referral in areas where eye doctors are scarce.

Shishu Maapan captures newborn measurements using a smartphone camera during home visits. Accurate anthropometry data helps identify growth problems early.

Wadhwani AI will provide technical support for deployment across all seven solutions, with room to expand the partnership to additional tools later.
