Vietnam and Singapore are moving forward with plans to establish the Vietnam Advanced Manufacturing Research Center (VAMRC), a joint facility that will focus on automation, robotics, AI in manufacturing, factory digital transformation, green manufacturing, and supply chain resilience. The Ministry of Science and Technology of Vietnam and the Singaporean Embassy discussed the cooperation on Wednesday, according to a ministry statement. The center aims to connect research with industrial application, allowing companies to test and validate technologies before large-scale deployment.
What the center will do
The proposed VAMRC would link businesses, universities, research institutes, and technology solution providers. It would take on specific problems from companies, develop and test solutions, and validate them before deploying on production lines. This approach helps firms assess new technologies and reduce both risk and cost before committing to major investment. The center's work in AI for Operations includes factory digital transformation and supply chain resilience.
Shared laboratory and research facilities will be open to foreign companies, small and medium-sized enterprises, and universities. These resources can be used for research, prototyping, technology testing, and new product development. For existing factories, the center can support technology upgrades and process optimization without requiring full production line replacements.
How the partnership is structured
The cooperation aligns with a document signed in May between Vietnam's industrial park developer Becamex and Singapore's Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR). Becamex is part of an alliance with Singapore's Sembcorp to develop industrial parks under the Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Park (VSIP) model. The center would provide a physical space where these partnerships can translate into applied research and scaled manufacturing solutions.
Government support and next steps
Vietnamese Minister of Science and Technology Vu Hai Quan said the ministry would support Becamex and A*STAR in building the center. "The ministry would support Becamex and A*STAR in building the center, possibly with the aid of state resources," Vu said. He asked Becamex to work with A*STAR on a detailed proposal covering objectives, priority areas, a governance model, investment needs, and each party's role.
Why this matters for science and research professionals
The VAMRC represents a direct channel between academic research and industrial manufacturing challenges. Researchers in fields like AI for Science & Research will gain access to shared facilities and industry-defined problems, creating opportunities for applied work and technology transfer. For scientists and engineers focused on automation, robotics, and green manufacturing, the center could become a testbed for scaling ideas from the lab to the factory floor. The initiative also signals growing demand for professionals who can bridge the gap between R&D and operational deployment in manufacturing.
