Walmart Patents AI Tools for Automated Pricing Decisions

Walmart has secured two patents for artificial intelligence systems that would automate pricing decisions, raising concerns among consumers about how retailers may use such technology.

The first patent, granted earlier this year, covers a system to automatically adjust prices based on market conditions. A second patent issued last week covers a "demand forecasting and price recommendation" tool that predicts consumer demand and suggests optimal prices.

The patents would apply across multiple product categories, including food, clothing, toys, and outdoor equipment, according to patent filings reviewed by the Financial Times.

Walmart said the patents are unrelated to dynamic pricing. The company characterized the January patent as focused on markdowns and the March patent as designed to help merchant teams make pricing decisions.

Digital Shelf Labels Already in Use

Walmart is rolling out electronic price labels across its U.S. stores. About 2,300 locations already use the technology, which replaces paper tags and allows instant price updates.

Retail analyst Neil Saunders of GlobalData said the digital labels are primarily aimed at reducing costs and improving efficiency. Automating price updates eliminates the need for employees to manually change tags across thousands of stores.

Consumer Backlash on Social Media

Social media users have expressed skepticism about the patents and technology rollout. Comments included "This isn't innovative, it's exploitative" and warnings that the developments "is not going to go well at all."

The concerns reflect broader questions about how AI may influence retail pricing practices across the industry.

For professionals in AI for Marketing and AI Agents & Automation, these developments illustrate real-world applications of machine learning in retail operations-and the public relations considerations that accompany them.
