Labor Department Offers Free AI Training to American Workers

The Department of Labor launched "Make America AI-Ready" last month, offering Americans a free seven-day AI literacy course delivered via text message. The initiative aims to build foundational AI skills in workers without requiring a laptop or consistent internet access.

The course, developed with education technology company Arist, sends 10-minute lessons daily over SMS. The department said the format makes training accessible to Americans across different circumstances.

What the course covers

Day one focuses on core AI concepts. The course defines AI simply: "a system that looks at massive amounts of data, finds patterns, and makes predictions." It introduces generative AI as technology that creates rather than just predicts.

Day two explains machine learning through trial and error at scale. The course emphasizes that AI reflects human patterns and biases, encouraging users to apply their own judgment to outputs rather than accept them without review.

Days three and four teach prompt engineering - how to write clear instructions for AI systems. The course compares vague requests to specific ones: asking for food might yield a raw turnip, while requesting a pizza with specific toppings produces better results. Strong prompts include a goal, context, and clear expectations.

Day five covers practical applications. The course shows how AI assists with repair guidance, skill-building, research, creativity, and decision-making.

Days six and seven address responsible use. The course instructs users to verify AI outputs for accuracy before acting on them, protect private information, and treat AI as a partner rather than a replacement. "AI supports your work. It doesn't replace your responsibility," the final lesson says.

Why the timing matters

A September Pew Research Center report found that 50% of Americans express more concern than excitement about increased AI use in daily life. Yet 73% say they would accept AI assistance with everyday activities.

Both industry and federal agencies have identified AI skills as critical to workforce competitiveness. The Labor Department's approach targets working Americans who may lack formal training opportunities or access to traditional education programs.

Workers interested in deeper training can explore resources on generative AI and LLM systems beyond the seven-day introduction.
