Jud Tarifi on the Future of AI and Career Advice
Jud Tarifi, the founder of Google's first AI team and now the head of his own startup, shares a striking perspective on the future of AI and career paths in the field. According to him, the AI industry as we know it will soon fade away. This is not because the technology will vanish, but because AI's challenges and applications will be solved so quickly that the field will transform dramatically.
Tarifi warns against pursuing a PhD in AI unless you are deeply passionate about it. “Artificial intelligence itself will disappear when you finish your doctoral thesis,” he says. “Even things like AI in robotics will be solved by then. If you want to work in AI, focus on niche areas like AI for biology, which is still in early stages, or consider other options.”
Why Avoid a PhD Unless You’re Obsessed
Tarifi earned his PhD in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Florida in 2012. After nearly a decade at Google, he started his own company, Integral AI, in 2021. He describes doctoral studies as a tough path that only “weird people” should take on, requiring five years of sacrifice and significant struggle.
His advice is clear: “Don’t pursue a PhD unless you are obsessed with the field. If you’re unsure, say no and move on. You’ll learn more, move faster, and adapt better to change by jumping directly into work.”
Focus on Specialized Skills and Social Intelligence
In addition to technical skills, Tarifi emphasizes the importance of social abilities and empathy in thriving alongside AI. While mastering hard sciences is achievable, effectively working with AI demands “emotional attunement” and good judgment. These qualities help stimulate creativity and make the most of AI’s potential.
- Specialize in niche AI sectors, such as AI for biology
- Consider skipping a PhD unless deeply passionate
