But "assistant" invites a responsibility gap. If the tool suggests a wrong diagnosis, is it the clinician's error, the software's fault, or the vendor's? Spell out oversight, data provenance, and escalation paths.

Why the press leans on these metaphors

  • Clarity: "Brain" beats "multimodal transformer with 70B parameters."
  • Story: Readers follow protagonists and conflicts. Human-like agents deliver both.
  • Ethics: It's easier to assign credit or blame to a "someone," even if that someone is code.

Practical language rules for your team

  • Add technical counterweights after any metaphor. Example: "It's a digital brain-meaning a model that predicts the next token based on training data. It does not understand or remember like a human."
  • Qualify agency. Swap "AI decides" for "the system recommends," "classifies," or "ranks." Name who approves, deploys, and is accountable.
