Wikipedia bans AI-generated article content
Wikipedia has prohibited editors from using artificial intelligence to generate or rewrite article content, citing violations of the encyclopedia's core policies. The ban applies to large language models including ChatGPT, Gemini, and DeepSeek.
The policy carves out two exceptions. Editors may use AI tools to suggest basic copyedits to their own writing, provided the tool doesn't introduce new information. Editors can also use AI to translate articles from other language versions of Wikipedia, following specific guidelines.
Wikipedia's rules don't specify penalties for violations, but the guidelines note that obvious AI misuse "may be struck or collapsed." Repeated violations constitute disruptive editing and can result in blocks or bans.
Traffic decline prompts stricter stance
The ban follows a concerning trend. In October, the Wikimedia Foundation reported that human traffic to Wikipedia fell 8% year-over-year as search engines and AI chatbots provide direct answers without sending users to the site.
The foundation attributed the decline to generative AI and social media changing how people find information. A Wikimedia spokesperson said the organization's strength "has been and always will be its human-centered, volunteer-driven model."
Parallel strategy: licensing content to AI companies
The restriction comes as Wikipedia pursues a contradictory path. In January, the Wikimedia Foundation announced partnerships with Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Meta. These agreements allow the companies to use Wikipedia content through an Enterprise product-a commercial service for extensive reuse of the platform's materials.
For writers using ChatGPT and other tools, Wikipedia's policy signals tighter scrutiny of AI-assisted content. Writers relying on AI for draft generation or article rewrites will need to adjust workflows.
Those working on Wikipedia should understand the distinction: AI can assist with editing your own prose or translation work, but cannot serve as a primary content creator.
