WordPress Debuts Telex AI Tool for Effortless Gutenberg Block Creation
WordPress introduced Telex, an AI tool that creates custom Gutenberg blocks from prompts. Though experimental, it aims to simplify WordPress development and save coding time.

WordPress Launches AI Development Tool: Telex
WordPress has introduced an early version of a new AI development tool called Telex. Announced at WordCamp US 2025 in Portland, this experimental tool is aimed at simplifying the creation of Gutenberg blocks—the modular components that build WordPress websites.
Telex allows users to generate custom content blocks by entering a prompt. The tool then returns a .zip file that can be installed as a plug-in on a WordPress site or used within WordPress Playground, a browser-based environment for running WordPress without hosting.
How Telex Works
- Users type a prompt describing the type of content block they want.
- Telex generates the block and packages it as a downloadable plugin.
- The plugin can be installed on any WordPress site or tested in WordPress Playground.
During the keynote, WordPress co-founder and Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg demonstrated Telex by showing how a developer created a simple marketing animation using the tool. While Telex is still labeled as “experimental,” it offers a glimpse at how AI might assist developers in building WordPress components more efficiently.
Telex’s Current Limitations
Early testers have noted that Telex requires further refinement. Several test projects either failed or needed additional adjustments to function properly. Mullenweg emphasized that Telex is still a prototype but expressed optimism about AI’s potential to support WordPress’s mission.
WordPress is investing in an AI team to guide developments that align with its long-term goals. The focus remains on making publishing accessible without requiring coding skills, reducing costs, and maintaining open-source principles.
Additional AI Experiments
Alongside Telex, Mullenweg presented a simpler AI-powered WordPress help assistant developed during Contributor Day. This browser-based tool offers support directly within WordPress. He also mentioned his favorite AI browser, Perplexity’s Comet, which allows users to interact with WordPress from its interface.
Legal Update
Mullenweg briefly addressed a legal dispute with hosting provider WP Engine. The issue centers on WP Engine allegedly profiting from WordPress’s work without sufficient contribution back to the project. Mullenweg seeks for WP Engine to license the WordPress trademark to avoid customer confusion regarding their association.
Regarding the ongoing case, Mullenweg noted a recent settlement conference where he appeared but the other CEO did not. The matter is progressing through the legal system, and he expressed trust in the courts to resolve the issue fairly.
Why This Matters for Developers
Telex represents an early step toward integrating AI into WordPress development workflows. By automating block creation based on prompts, developers could save time on routine coding tasks and focus more on design and customization.
While still experimental, tools like Telex show promise for teams and freelancers looking to streamline WordPress site building with AI assistance. Keeping an eye on its progress might be worthwhile for IT professionals involved in WordPress development.
