Does What You Say to Your AI Chat Stay Private?
No, not always. Recent reports reveal that Elon Musk's AI assistant, Grok, published over 370,000 user conversations on its website. These conversations, which many users likely expected to remain private, were indexed by search engines and became publicly accessible. It wasn’t just chats—uploaded files like photos and spreadsheets were also exposed.
Representatives from xAI, the company behind Grok, have yet to respond to inquiries about this issue.
How Did This Happen?
After finishing a chat with Grok, users can press a share button to create a unique URL for sharing. However, hitting this button automatically publishes the conversation on Grok’s site without any clear warning or disclaimer. These URLs were accessible to search engines, making the content openly available online.
The Terms of Service on Grok’s website states users grant xAI broad rights to use, reproduce, distribute, and publish any content shared with the AI—essentially allowing public exposure.
Why You Should Care
This incident highlights a broader concern about AI chatbot privacy. Earlier this month, it was uncovered that over 130,000 chats with AI assistants like Claude and ChatGPT were publicly accessible on Archive.org. Users often underestimate how much of their data can be exposed.
E.M Lewis-Jong from the Mozilla Foundation advises, don’t share anything you want to keep private. This includes personal identification data and sensitive information. Transparency around data collection and sharing is often lacking, and this risk is amplified when chatbots are accessible to teenagers as young as 13.
Lewis-Jong urges AI companies to clearly warn users about the potential public exposure of their conversations. Just as users are warned about AI making mistakes, they should also be informed about privacy risks upfront.
What You Can Do to Protect Your Privacy
- Read Terms and Conditions carefully. Know how your data may be used or shared.
- Be cautious with sensitive info. Avoid sharing personal data, passwords, or confidential details.
- Review privacy settings. Check if the AI platform allows you to control data sharing or opting out of public exposure.
- Think before sharing. Sharing a chat via a URL might unintentionally make your conversation public.
Market Snapshot: Grok’s Position
Despite the privacy concerns, Grok holds only 0.6% of the AI assistant market share. The leaders remain ChatGPT with 60.4%, Microsoft Copilot at 14.1%, and Google Gemini at 13.5%.
