AI agent for ecologists
Citizen Science Record Review Agent
A volunteer dataset where every flagged record is confirmed, corrected or removed with a documented reason.
What it does
A volunteer dataset of 20,000 records is useful until you find a tropical bird in a northern field or a coordinate in the ocean. This agent checks each record against range maps, season, habitat and attached photos. It flags outliers, such as records far outside the known range or at an odd time of year, and records with coordinates that do not match the stated place. It sends flagged records to the expert reviewers by drafting a short review request with the evidence, and updates the dataset when reviewers confirm or reject. It then rechecks the accepted records for consistency. You approve the accepted set. Edge case: a first record for a region is held for an expert and never auto-rejected.
How it works
Follow the arrows from top to bottom. The orange dashed arrow is the loop: when a check fails, the agent goes back and tries again.
Read the steps as a list
- New batch of records downloaded
- Load records and the range, habitat and season references
- Check coordinates against the stated place and habitat
- Check species against range and season, and photo where present
- Does the record fit range, season and habitat? If not: add the record to the review list with the specific evidence. Back to step 3.
- Draft review requests for expert reviewers
- Ecologist approves review requestsThe agent waits here for your OK.
- Read reviewer decisions and update the dataset
- Do accepted records still pass the consistency checks after correction? If not: return them to review with the new inconsistency. Back to step 3.
- Ecologist approves the accepted setThe agent waits here for your OK.
- Reviewed dataset
How it decides
A record passes if species, place and date fit the known range and season, and it has a plausible location. Others go to review, and first regional records always go to an expert.
- Record more than 500 km outside the known range: review
- Coordinates in water for a land species: review or correct the coordinates
- Record with no photo and a rare species: review
- First regional record: hold for an expert, never auto-reject
Make it yours
Every agent is a starting point. You choose these settings for your own situation.
- Range distance limit (default 500 km)
- Species needing photos
- Reviewer assignments
- Season rules
- Batch size
What keeps you in control
It always asks you first
- Review requests to experts
- The accepted dataset
Hard limits
- Never delete records, mark them rejected with a reason
- Never contact volunteers without approval
It stops when
- Done: batch reviewed and approved
- Stop: reviewers not available, items stay on hold
