AI agent for sustainability analysts
Emission Factor Update Agent
Bring every emission factor in the inventory up to date with a clear view of the effect on totals.
What it does
A greenhouse gas inventory is only as current as the emission factors in it, and factors are republished each year with changes that matter. This agent reads the inventory's activity data and the factor used for each line, with its source and year. It checks each against the latest published sets such as national grid factors, fuel factors and the sources the analyst has chosen, and flags those that are outdated, superseded or from the wrong region or unit. For each flagged line it recalculates the emissions with the new factor, shows the change by line and in total, and reruns the whole inventory to check the totals and units still add up. It never overwrites the inventory. The analyst approves the updates. Edge case: a factor that changed method, not just value, is flagged for review rather than swapped.
How it works
Follow the arrows from top to bottom. The orange dashed arrow is the loop: when a check fails, the agent goes back and tries again.
Read the steps as a list
- New factor release or quarterly review
- Read each line's activity data, factor and source year
- Look up the latest published factors for each line
- Flag outdated, superseded or mismatched factors
- Do units, region and scope match the new factor? If not: search for the matching variant or flag the line for manual review. Back to step 3.
- Recalculate emissions with the new factors
- Show the change by line and in total
- Do totals and units reconcile with the old inventory except for the factor changes? If not: find the line that breaks the reconciliation and fix the calculation. Back to step 6.
- Analyst approves the updatesThe agent waits here for your OK.
- Updated inventory and change log
How it decides
It flags a factor when a newer official version exists for the same activity, region and unit, and accepts the swap only if units and scope match.
- Flag a factor when a newer official version exists
- Require unit and region match before any swap
- Flag a method change for manual review
- Show lines where the change exceeds 5% of the line total
Make it yours
Every agent is a starting point. You choose these settings for your own situation.
- Factor sources in order of preference
- Review schedule
- Material change threshold (default 5%)
- Reporting standard
- Regions covered
What keeps you in control
It always asks you first
- Adoption of each new factor
- Restating past inventory years
Hard limits
- Never overwrite the original inventory
- Cite the source and year of every factor
It stops when
- Done: factors updated and approved
- Stop: no matching published factor exists
