AI agent for policy makers
Expiring Law and Sunset Watch Agent
No sunset date arrives without an up-to-date briefing and a known reauthorization status
What it does
Statutes and regulations with sunset clauses expire quietly, and a program can lapse because no one noticed the date. This agent scans statutes and regulations for sunset clauses and builds a calendar of expiry dates, with what each law does and who depends on it. It checks the status of any reauthorization bill, whether introduced, in committee or passed. As each date approaches, it drafts a briefing with the program's purpose, the funds involved, the status of reauthorization and options. Each week it rechecks the bill status and the dates, because bills move and dates are sometimes amended. It confirms that the briefing matches the latest status before sending. The policy lead approves the briefing. Edge case: a sunset clause that was extended by an earlier amendment is caught by checking the current consolidated text.
How it works
Follow the arrows from top to bottom. The orange dashed arrow is the loop: when a check fails, the agent goes back and tries again.

How it decides
A law is on the watch list when the current text has a sunset date within the window. The briefing level depends on how soon it expires and whether a reauthorization is moving.
- Brief at 180, 90 and 30 days before expiry
- Escalate any expiry within 60 days with no bill moving
- Use the consolidated current text for dates
