AI agent for geologists
Geological Report Cross-Reference Check Agent
Reach a draft where every figure, table, citation and coordinate agrees with the data files.
What it does
A long geological report goes through many drafts, and references drift: Figure 4 becomes Figure 5, a table is cut but still cited, a reference is missing from the list, a sample coordinate is retyped wrongly. This agent reads the draft and builds a list of every figure, table, citation and coordinate mentioned. It checks each figure and table call-out against the captions, each citation against the reference list, and each coordinate and sample value against the source data files. It lists every break with the page and the correct value. After the geologist edits, it checks the whole document again, because one fix often shifts numbering. It never edits the text itself. Edge case: a coordinate in a different datum is flagged for conversion rather than marked wrong.
How it works
Follow the arrows from top to bottom. The orange dashed arrow is the loop: when a check fails, the agent goes back and tries again.
Read the steps as a list
- New draft saved
- Extract all figure, table, citation and coordinate mentions
- Compare call-outs to captions and numbering
- Compare citations to the reference list
- Compare coordinates and values to the data files
- Write the break list with page, found value and correct value
- Geologist reviews the list and makes the editsThe agent waits here for your OK.
- Is the list empty after the edits? If not: rerun all comparisons on the new draft and list what is still broken. Back to step 2.
- Do data files agree with each other on shared samples? If not: flag the two files and ask which is correct before changing text. Back to step 5.
- Geologist approves the final reportThe agent waits here for your OK.
- Clean draft with a check log
How it decides
It treats the data file as the source of truth for numbers and coordinates, and the caption list as the source of truth for numbering. It flags the text, not the data, unless two data files disagree.
- Treat any call-out with no matching caption as a break
- Flag coordinates that differ by more than 1 m from the data file
- Flag a datum mismatch as a conversion question, not an error
- Flag references cited but not listed, and listed but never cited
Make it yours
Every agent is a starting point. You choose these settings for your own situation.
- Coordinate tolerance (default 1 m)
- Which data files count as source of truth
- Citation style to check against
- Whether to check appendices (default yes)
What keeps you in control
It always asks you first
- Edits made after the break list
- Final approval of the report
Hard limits
- Never change text or data files, only report
- Keep a dated log of each check run
It stops when
- Done: zero breaks across two full checks
- Stop: source data files conflict and the owner has not decided
