AI agent for law students

Legal Memo Research Loop Agent

A memo built on complete, valid authority

Legal Memo Research Loop Agent: what goes in, what the agent does and what you get

What it does

Legal memo assignments test research as much as writing, and students often stop searching too early. This agent helps the student frame the question, list search terms and jurisdictions, and plan which sources to search. The student does the searching and logs the authorities found. The agent checks each authority's jurisdiction, date and later history. It flags negative history and out-of-state cases when an in-state case exists. It then checks whether binding authority has been found; if not, it suggests new searches and checks again after the student logs more results. When a draft exists, it checks that the memo's citations match the research log. The student writes the memo and decides on its final form. Edge case: the student relies on a case from another state when an in-state case on point exists.

How it works

Follow the arrows from top to bottom. The orange dashed arrow is the loop: when a check fails, the agent goes back and tries again.

An example run

What happensFor a memo on a landlord's duty to mitigate in Ohio due October 24, Sam logged nine authorities. The agent checked them and the check failed: his main case was from Indiana, and an Ohio appellate case on point existed, and one Ohio case had been reversed in part. It suggested new searches. Sam found two binding Ohio cases. The draft citation check matched the log, and Sam finalized the memo.
