Open Call Matching Agent

A weekly shortlist of fair, fitting open calls

Open Call Matching Agent: what goes in, what the agent does and what you get

What it does

Open calls range from great opportunities to fee traps that grab rights to the artist's work. Each week this agent scans open call listings, competitions and juried shows. It filters by the artist's medium, location, career stage and fee budget. It reads the terms of each call for warning signs, such as unlimited use of submitted work, high fees with few awards, or unclear judges. It checks each shortlisted call against the artist's own rules. Calls that fail are dropped with the reason shown. It ranks the rest by fit and prize value, and adds deadlines to the calendar after the artist chooses. The artist decides where to apply. Edge case: a call with no listed judges or past winners is flagged as unverified.

How it works

Follow the arrows from top to bottom. The orange dashed arrow is the loop: when a check fails, the agent goes back and tries again.

An example run

What happensIn the week of March 10, the scan found 34 new calls and 18 fit the artist's medium. The terms check failed for five that granted the organizer unlimited use of all entries, and two had no judges listed. The agent dropped them with reasons and ranked the other 11. The artist chose the top one, a $3,000 prize with a $25 fee.
