AI agent for packaging engineers

Packaging Material Substitution Agent

A material change decision backed by test results and full cost

Packaging Material Substitution Agent: what goes in, what the agent does and what you get

What it does

Switching to a thinner film or another board grade can save money, but savings often get approved before protection is proven. This agent takes a proposed material and compares its specs with the current one: strength, barrier, weight, cost and recyclability. It drafts a test plan based on the gaps it finds, including a line trial, since a material that passes in the lab may not run on the machines. As results arrive, it compares each with acceptance limits. If a test fails, it suggests the next option, such as a heavier grade or a blend, and updates the plan. Once all tests pass, it calculates the full cost effect including freight and waste. The packaging engineer approves the final choice and any supplier change.

How it works

Follow the arrows from top to bottom. The orange dashed arrow is the loop: when a check fails, the agent goes back and tries again.

Read the steps as a list
  1. New material proposed
  2. Compare specs with the current material
  3. Draft a test plan for each gap
  4. Record lab and line trial results
  5. Do all tests meet acceptance limits? If not: suggest the next grade or option and update the test plan. Back to step 3.
  6. Calculate total cost effect including freight
  7. Engineer approves the material changeThe agent waits here for your OK.
  8. Material change decision record

How it decides

It accepts a material only when every required test meets its limit and total landed cost is lower or the sustainability gain is approved.

  • Barrier and strength limits come from the product spec
  • Line trial is required before approval
  • Cost includes freight and waste, not only unit price

Make it yours

Every agent is a starting point. You choose these settings for your own situation.

  • Required tests per product
  • Acceptance limits
  • Weight given to recyclability
  • Cost fields included

What keeps you in control

It always asks you first

  • Approving a material change
  • Changing a supplier spec

Hard limits

  • Never changes purchasing specs
  • Never skips required tests

It stops when

  • Done: decision recorded
  • Stop: no option passes; keep current material and document why

An example run

What happensA 40 micron film was proposed to replace 50 micron, saving 6%. On 3 March it failed the puncture test at 4.1 N against a 5 N limit. The agent logged the failure, suggested a 45 micron blend and reran the plan. The blend passed puncture, seal strength and the line trial at full speed. Savings were 3.5% after freight. The engineer approved the change.
