Social Security Claiming Strategy Agent

Compare claiming strategies on household outcomes and present a ranked, explained recommendation

Social Security Claiming Strategy Agent: what goes in, what the agent does and what you get

What it does

A couple at 62 and 60 asks when to claim and the advisor has only a rule of thumb. This agent reads the earnings records and spouse data, then models claiming ages for each person, including survivor benefits and spousal benefits. It checks each strategy against the household's other income, taxes and portfolio withdrawals and compares total lifetime income under several longevity assumptions. It ranks the options and shows the trade-offs. It reruns when assumptions change, such as a different life expectancy, a return rate or a new earnings record. It flags missing data, like years with no recorded earnings. The advisor approves the advice shown to the client. Edge case: a client in poor health is tested at a shorter life expectancy.

How it works

Follow the arrows from top to bottom. The orange dashed arrow is the loop: when a check fails, the agent goes back and tries again.

How it decides

It ranks strategies by household income at several longevity points and by survivor protection, with taxes and withdrawals included.

  • Test at least three life expectancy assumptions
  • Include survivor benefits in every comparison
  • Include taxes on benefits and withdrawals
  • Flag years with no earnings record

Make it yours

Every agent is a starting point. You choose these settings for your own situation.

  • Longevity assumptions (default 82, 90 and 95)
  • Return and inflation assumptions (default advisor standard)
  • Strategies compared (default earliest, full retirement, 70)
  • Tax detail (default federal only)

What keeps you in control

It always asks you first

  • Advisor approves the advice presented to the client

Hard limits

  • Never file or claim on the client's behalf
  • Never promise benefit amounts
  • State all assumptions

It stops when

  • Done: Strategy chosen and documented by the advisor
  • Stop: Data cannot be verified, so hand to the advisor

An example run

What happensFor clients aged 62 and 60, the first run finds 2 missing earnings years for the husband, so it asks for them. After the reload, the higher earner delaying to 70 and the lower earner claiming at 63 gives the most income at age 90 and the best survivor outcome. At age 82 the difference is small. The advisor approves showing 3 options.
