Coinmarket MCP server
by anjor
Lets your AI look up cryptocurrency prices and listings from CoinMarketCap for you.

This is a small helper that connects your AI assistant to CoinMarketCap, a popular website that tracks cryptocurrency prices. Once it is set up, you can just ask your AI about coins and prices in normal words, and it will fetch the numbers for you. It is handy for anyone who follows crypto prices but does not want to keep opening a website or app.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you using what it already knows. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to an app or service. This one connects your AI to CoinMarketCap, so it can look up live crypto prices and listings when you ask. You do not need to understand how it works under the hood. You just ask, and the helper does the fetching.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI something like what is the price of bitcoin right now. The AI passes your question to this helper program. The helper then talks to the CoinMarketCap service using a key you provide. CoinMarketCap sends back the latest listings or quotes, and the helper hands them to your AI. Your AI then shows you the answer in the chat, in plain words.
Click to zoomWhat you can do with it
- Look up the current price of a specific coin like bitcoin or ethereum
- Get a list of the latest cryptocurrency listings from CoinMarketCap
- Check quotes for a coin by its name (slug) or its short symbol
- Ask for prices of several coins in one go
- Get a quick snapshot of the crypto market without leaving your chat
Try asking your AI
- “What is the current price of bitcoin?”
- “Show me the latest cryptocurrency listings from CoinMarketCap.”
- “Give me the quote for ethereum and solana.”
- “What is the price of BTC right now?”
What it gives back to you
You get back plain answers in the chat, like prices, short names, and symbols for the coins you asked about. For listings, you get a list of coins with their current values. The AI may also summarize the numbers in a sentence or a small table. Everything appears right in the conversation, so you do not have to switch apps.
Before you start
What you need
- A CoinMarketCap API key (a kind of password for apps; you get one by signing up on the CoinMarketCap website)
- Python 3.12 or higher
- The uv package manager (a small tool that runs the helper; the README shows how to install it)
- The Claude desktop app if you want to use it there
Good to know
You need your own CoinMarketCap API key, and heavy use may hit the limits or costs of your CoinMarketCap plan, so check your plan before asking for lots of lookups.
