usb-rea MCP server
Let your AI study USB traffic from a gadget and write a small Python driver for it.
usb-rea is a tool that watches the USB messages between your computer and a gadget, like an RGB keyboard or a small LCD screen, while you click buttons in the maker's app. It then guesses how those messages work and writes a small Python program that can talk to the device without the maker's app. It is handy if you own a gadget whose only software is a Windows app you do not like, and you would rather control it yourself.
What is an MCP server? The 30-second version
On its own, your AI can only chat with you. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something outside the chat. This one connects your AI to usb-rea, a USB traffic analyzer that runs on your own computer. Once connected, your AI can start a capture, label your clicks, look at the differences, and write a driver file for you, all from the chat window.
What this MCP server does
You ask your AI to help you figure out a USB gadget. Your AI uses this helper to start recording USB traffic on your machine. You then click around in the gadget's official app, and the helper labels each click. When you stop, the helper compares the messages for each click, spots which bytes change, checks for checksums and counters, and writes a report that links every conclusion to a specific packet. Finally it can write a small Python driver file you can run yourself.
What you can do with it
- Record USB traffic from a gadget while you use its app
- Label each action you take so the tool knows what each click did
- Compare packets between actions to see which bytes change
- Write a report that ties every guess to the exact packets
- Generate a Python driver file for the device
- Decode a HID report descriptor from a keyboard, mouse or similar device
- Send a packet back to the device, but only after you confirm it
Try asking your AI
- “Start a USB capture and call it lamp.pcapng”
- “Mark this moment as brightness 50 percent”
- “Compare the actions in lamp.pcapng and write a report”
- “Generate a Python driver from lamp.pcapng”
What it gives back to you
You get back a written report in markdown that explains each part of the protocol, with links to the exact packet numbers. You also get a Python file you can run to control the device. In the chat, your AI will show you the report contents and the driver code, and can answer follow-up questions about specific bytes.
Before you start
What you need
- Python installed on your computer (the tool is a Python package)
- On Linux, permission to load the usbmon module (usually means running with sudo)
- On Windows, USBPcap installed so captures can be recorded
- A USB gadget you own and the maker's app to click around in
Good to know
This tool can send packets back to your USB device, which could change its settings or, in rare cases, damage it, so only use replay on devices you own and understand.
Install it with your AI
Add usb-rea MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed
You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.
Sign in to get the install prompt
Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check usb-rea MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,361 MCP servers here for you.
Who it's for
People who like to tinker with their own hardware, especially those who want to control a gadget without the maker's app.
