Rust Docs MCP server

by Govcraft

Lets your AI look up current documentation for a specific Rust crate before writing code.

Flow diagram: you ask your AI “How do I make a simple GET request with reqwest?”, on your own computer the Rust Docs MCP server works with rust crate docs, and you get back A short answer in your chat.

This is a small helper program that gives your AI assistant fresh, accurate documentation for one Rust crate at a time. It is handy if you write Rust code with an AI assistant and keep getting suggestions that use old or wrong versions of a library. You run one copy of it per crate you care about.

What is an MCP server? The 30-second version

On its own, your AI can only chat with what it already learned during training. An MCP server is a small helper program that gives your AI a new skill or a connection to something outside the chat. This one connects your AI to the current documentation of a Rust crate, like serde or reqwest, so it can look things up for you. When you ask a question, the AI asks this helper, and the helper answers from the real docs.

What this MCP server does

You start the server and tell it which Rust crate you want, for example serde or tokio. The first time, it downloads that crate's documentation and turns it into a searchable form, which can take a few minutes. After that, when you ask your AI a question about the crate, the AI sends the question to this helper. The helper finds the most relevant part of the docs and asks an AI model to write a short answer based only on that part. You get the answer back in your chat, prefixed with the crate name.

What you can do with it

  • Ask how to use a specific function or type in a Rust crate
  • Get answers based on the current documentation, not old training data
  • Run several copies at once, one for each crate you use
  • Specify a crate version, like reqwest@0.12.0, to match your project
  • Turn on crate features so the docs match your setup
  • Reuse cached docs on later runs so startup is fast

Try asking your AI

  • “How do I make a simple GET request with reqwest?”
  • “What is the difference between Serialize and Deserialize in serde?”
  • “Show me how to spawn a task with tokio and wait for it.”
  • “What does the ClientBuilder timeout method do in reqwest?”

What it gives back to you

You get a short written answer in your chat, based on the crate's documentation. It starts with a label like From serde docs: so you know where it came from. The answer is plain text, not code files or lists of links. If the docs do not cover your question, the answer may be vague or say it cannot find it.

Before you start

What you need

  • An OpenAI API key (a kind of password for OpenAI's services; you get one from your OpenAI account, and using it costs a small amount of money)
  • The rustdocs_mcp_server program, downloaded from the GitHub Releases page or built from source
  • An internet connection the first time, to download the crate docs and create the search index
  • An MCP-capable AI assistant, like Claude Desktop, Cursor, or Roo Code

Good to know

It sends your questions and parts of the crate documentation to OpenAI, and each new crate or version costs a small amount on your OpenAI account.

Install it with your AI

Add Rust Docs MCP server to your AI, no technical skills needed

You don't install anything by hand. You copy one prompt, paste it into an AI that can work on your computer, and it checks, installs and connects the server for you, asking you when it needs something.

Sign in to get the install prompt

Members get a ready-made prompt that lets the Claude desktop app check Rust Docs MCP server, install it and connect it for them, step by step. You don't need any technical skills: you copy, paste and answer a few questions. Your connected AI can also find and install any of the 4,066 MCP servers here for you.

Who it's for

Rust developers who use an AI coding assistant and want it to suggest code that matches the current version of a crate.
